Dr Kayle discusses ways to get a butt lift

I hate how my bum looks and am desperate for it to be more shapely. I have heard about the Brazilian Butt Lift. Is this something I should consider?

Thanks to celebrities such as the Kardashians showing off their sizeable bottoms, fat transfer to the buttocks has become a popular procedure and is commonly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift. The procedure involves liposuction to harvest fat from areas of excess and then preparing the fat and finally transferring it to the buttocks to sculpt more optimal proportions.

Your own fat is the safest material to utilise – it’s yours, it’s not foreign material, and so it’s not likely to be rejected and may last for a long time. But this means that if you don’t have enough fat to harvest then you cannot really have the procedure. Here, Hyaluronic Acid Body fillers come into play; however, they are more expensive than fat if you compare volume to volume and they don’t last more than 12 months, so you have to keep repeating the procedure and of course, the expenses. Permanent fillers are mentioned here to be condemned and their use is a definite no as there are too many complications such as infection, horrible cysts and unsightly scarring.

Finding a surgeon skilled in liposuction and body contouring is crucial for a good result. The surgeon has to completely understand the anatomy of the buttocks as the injected fat has to stay above the muscle for the safest and best result.

Also it is important to remember that this procedure is not a one-off as the initial results from the first treatment are not always permanent. In some cases, 50 to 60 per cent of the volume will be lost at the end of the first post-operative year. This is because this procedure is actually a graft and our bodies can’t cope with all the volume that is injected at once. In that case, to get the bottom you want, you might need to repeat the procedures to allow for the loss of volume after the initial intervention.

Recovery also takes patience and can be a bit painful for the first week; however, the new shape of your body will give you a good booster to tolerate that. Keep in mind that it is not only the bottom that was improved upon but the rest of the body as well due to the effect of the liposuction. For those who are willing to have a bottom to rival Jennifer Lopez, then this can be a terrific solution.
