Dr Kayle helps you decide between fillers or surgical procedure
How do I decide whether I need fillers or a more invasive surgical procedure?
Fillers have come a long way in the past decade and now the market is flooded with an extensive range of dermal fillers to address a variety of facial aging issues. These include Hyaluronic acid (HA) based fillers, which can add instant volume to smooth away wrinkles and add volume to lips and facial contours. Thanks to the scientific advances, there are now fillers that go deeper and that come in a variety of consistencies and strengths. It is also possible to mix hyaluronic acid fillers of different thickness together to achieve the best outcome. The results from a relatively painless dermal filler treatment can last from four months to a year. These sorts of treatments are best used to correct the early signs of aging on younger patients, specifically those in their late 30s to mid-40s. The ideal candidates for fillers are people who have shallow wrinkles, light hollowing (volume loss), and relatively normal skin elasticity. In these cases, the regular user of fillers can actually considerably delay the need for more invasive surgical procedures, especially if the patient begins filler treatments early in the aging process.
Though injectables have made huge strides in recent years, unfortunately, however, the bad news is that fillers are unable to adequately address a variety of late-term aging symptoms suffered by those who are in the over-45 age bracket. While many people may wish to avoid cosmetic surgery and its necessary recovery time, using dermal fillers to correct the effects of moderate to severe aging can actually make signs of aging worse! This is because as we age the face begins to suffer from severe tissue laxity and loosening of the skin and using fillers (rather than surgically tightening the skin) can create an unnatural “bloated” appearance where the face lacks normal definition and facial proportions become distorted. The better option in such cases is to opt for a facelift if you have loose, sagging, skin in the face or neck areas or for those experiencing droopy eyelids, also a sign of aging, where then eye-lift surgery can be a terrific option. The good news is that surgery has also come a long way too. As the procedures have developed, a good surgeon can use the manual excision and tightening of loose and sagging skin and underlying muscle to create a natural look, knocking off years of aging. And best of all, the results can last for up to 10 years!
It is worth remembering too that given the longevity of the results, this means that the cost of fillers and surgical interventions are more or less comparable. With face fillers, you will pay less at a time, but since the results aren’t lasting, you will need multiple procedures, which over time will amount to the same cost of the surgical option.
